  • 1940s Society - 'The Colonel of Tamarkan, Philip Toosey and the Bridge on the River Kwai’

    19:00 to 21:30

    A talk by Julie Summers.

Alec Guinness won an Oscar for his portrayal of Colonel Nicholson in ‘The Bridge on the River KwaiÕ but, as Julie Summers reveals, his role bore scant resemblance to historical fact.

The real officer in charge of the malnourished, diseased and brutalised slave-labour force that built the bridge was her grandfather Philip Toosey. In Julie's talk she draws upon those who knew and fought alongside him to create a remarkable tribute to a forgotten British hero.

The meeting will be in Otford Village Memorial Hall (OVMH). Doors open at 7pm and the talk will be at 7.30pm. Admission £5, (cash only please). Refreshments will be available.
