THE
OTFORD SOLAR SYSTEM

The Otford Solar System is 25 years old, and we’re giving it a space-age makeover!

Thanks to a generous donation from Otford Parish Council, we’ve installed a new colourful interpretation board at the far end of the Otford Recreation Ground, and we’re in the process of updating each planet marker  with new signage featuring QR codes linking to fun and informative videos which are perfect for visitors of all ages.  Each video will give the what3words locations of the next planet which will help you navigate the solar system with ease.  No more ending up at Pluto when you were heading to Mars!

More about the Otford Solar System

In Memory of David Thomas -  1930 - 2010
David Thomas was the visionary behind the Otford Solar System Model. He not only conceived the idea but also played a key role in its design and construction. For many years, David energetically maintained and promoted the model, sharing his passion for astronomy and education with the wider community.
A well-known and much-loved figure in the village, David made many friends through his warmth and enthusiasm. His creativity and dedication were hallmarks of his time as curator of the model. With characteristic charm and gentle persuasion, he inspired several institutions to “join in the fun” by hosting models of some of the nearest stars, extending the reach and impact of the project.
In keeping with his vocation, David was always keen to help others make the most of the model’s educational potential. He and his wife Audrey were familiar figures on the recreation ground, often seen marking out, mowing, and maintaining the orbits of the planets with care and devotion.
David's legacy lives on in the Otford Solar System Model.

Explore the fascinating origins of the Otford Solar System in this article from the October 2003 issue of the Journal of the British Astronomical Association.

Mostly narrated by David Thomas, this video follows the journey of the Otford Solar System – from the early planning stages and installation right through to its official opening by local astronomer Commander H. Hatfield on 14 July 2001.   It also includes a visit by Sir Patrick Moore in 2003 and some great TV coverage from 2009 on London Tonight and BBC News!
