All Otford Society Members are invited to our Annual General Meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday 29th April (doors open at 7pm) in the Otford Village Memorial Hall. The meeting will include refreshments and a talk by Rod Shelton entitled “In the Beginning”. This talk traces the earliest origins of our Darent Valley. How did it come into being? What where the animals and peoples it once supported. The history of the river and the industries that once thrived along its banks – the origin of paper-making in England – the birth place of so many inventions and industry. Amazing! Yet today the Darent is little more than a stream and its water is running dry. Why? It’s a fascinating story so come along and find out more.
The Friends of Otford Station are delighted to unveil the first phase of the transformation of the garden at the front of the Station. It was a big day for the volunteers – a new sign with walk leaflet dispensers has been installed and the garden has been weeded and mulched with chipped bark. The area is being opened up to encourage people to come in and walk around. Whilst the planting will not take place until late April or early May, the preparation is complete to make the station burst with colour in the summer!
Huge thanks to Otford Builders Merchants for their kind donation of a ton of chipped bark and a ton of topsoil. Please do all you can to support this local business that contributes so much to our community with vital donations of materials as well as employment. Thanks also to the Darent Valley Community Rail Partnership for their funding support.
Finally, THANK YOU again to our wonderful team of volunteers, if you’d like to join the team and can spare a couple of hours every few months please drop us a message or email station@otfordsociety.org.uk.
From 9th April until Easter Monday, you’ll find eggs hidden all around Otford village in our EGGciting annual Easter Trail. They will be in shop windows, in the High Street and the Parade and hidden along the footpaths linking the two. Children under eleven will be able to report how many they’ve counted to the lovely people in Mille Fleurs, Ibbett Mosely (on the Parade), Fine & Country (near the pond) or at Yvonne’s shop in Telston Lane – and claim a small prize.
If you take part in this fun event and you find an egg, please leave it where you found it to ensure other children can also locate it.
Merry Christmas to everyone in our wonderful village from all of us at the Otford Society!
