Otford Society Annual General Meeting – Friday 24th April 2026

  • Post category:Events

At this year’s Otford Society Annual General Meeting, members will have the opportunity to hear about the Society’s planned events and actitivies for 2026. Following the AGM, we are privileged to welcome Richard Knox-Johnston, Chairman of the London Green Belt Council, who will give a talk on the proposed reclassification of parts of the Green Belt as “Grey Belt.” This issue is highly relevant to Otford and the surrounding area, particularly in light of the potential threat posed by large-scale housing developments. Everyone is welcome and members are warmly invited to enjoy complimentary glass of wine or soft drink, along with nibbles..

What a Wonderful Day!

  • Post category:Events

It was fantastic to see the village green come alive in the sunshine for the Otford Great British BBQ on Bank Holiday Monday.    A huge thank you to everyone who helped make it such a success: St Bart’s for keeping us refreshed with tea, coffee, delicious cakes, jams and preserves. The Bull whose incredible inflatable (and momentarily deflatable!) pub was a huge hit! The Methodist Church & Little Treacles Nursery for their brilliant children’s activities and Alice a young village entrepreneur whose handmade bracelets were very popular.   The musical line-up was superb and created a fantastic atmosphere, bringing everyone together with a happy, relaxed vibe.   The biggest thanks must, of course, go to our amazing volunteers. Without you, none of this would have been possible. The BBQ team especially deserve a round of applause for working tirelessly in the heat to keep everyone fed. Thanks also to those who ran the ticket desk, stewarded the event, served ice cream and wine, and helped return the green to its tidy state afterwards. It's wonderful to have so many willing hands to help an event like this run so smoothly.    If you’d like to join in the fun and volunteer at future events, we’d love to have you on the team! Just email volunteers@otfordsociety.org.uk.   We'll be back in two years’ time for the next BBQ on the Green – see you then!

Celebrating 25 years of the Otford Solar System!

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Otford Solar System, and we’re giving it a space-age makeover! Thanks to a generous donation from Otford Parish Council, we’re installing a new colourful interpretation board and updating each planet marker with new signage featuring QR codes linking to fun and informative videos - perfect for visitors of all ages. We’re also adding what3words locations to help you navigate the solar system with ease (no more ending up at Pluto when you were heading to Mars!). Join us for the re-launch celebration on Saturday 26th July at 12 noon, at the far end of the recreation ground near the Sun marker.  At this event Janice McLean President of the British Astronomical Association will be unveiling the new interpretation board, and you can enjoy a glass of prosecco (free for Otford Society members!) and treat yourself to an ice cream while we toast this cosmic occasion. Can’t make the launch? No problem! You’ll be able to visit the Otford Solar System at your own leisure. There’s a whole universe waiting for you - right here in Otford.

Otford Society Annual General Meeting – Tuesday 29th April

  • Post category:Events

All Otford Society Members are invited to our Annual General Meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday 29th April (doors open at 7pm)  in the Otford Village Memorial Hall. The meeting will include refreshments and a talk by Rod Shelton entitled “In the Beginning”.  This talk traces the earliest origins of our Darent Valley.  How did it come into being? What where the animals and peoples it once supported.  The history of the river and the industries that once thrived along its banks – the origin of paper-making in England – the birth place of so many inventions and industry.  Amazing! Yet today the Darent is little more than a stream and its water is running dry.  Why? It’s a fascinating story so come along and find out more.
